Starting a new habit can seem daunting, but if you keep your expectations minimal and stay persistent, little changes can make a big difference. Here are 5 ways to successfully start a new habit:
1. Start small. Even if you do something new a few times or for only a few minutes a day, it counts. You can build up to longer commitments.
2. Utilize prompts. Notifications and other everyday happenings can be great catalysts to get you on track with a new commitment. If the reminders on your phone aren’t working, maybe use your morning coffee as a way to remind yourself to do something.
3. Anchor your new habit to an old one. Brushing your teeth every night is likely a default. Use autopilot habits as anchors to attach and prompt (see #2) your new habit.
4.Track your progress. Sticker charts aren’t only for children. There are also plenty of apps available for tracking. Keep track and watch yourself grow and improve.
5. Celebrate small wins. Completing a habit even once every week is a win. Pat yourself on the back each time you accomplish.
