After recently speaking to a group of elementary school students, I realized that the lesson I was teaching them was what you want to be when you grow up can ALWAYS (and maybe should always) change.
As I’m sure most would agree, the path to our future is anything but linear. We grow up with this idea in mind, that if we just get through school, we’ll be at a place where we obtain a fulfilling job and the rest will fall into place. Life is not like that, and if it was, it would be quite boring. Instead, we are giving endless choices and opportunities, all of which create new and windy roads that eventually lead us to the present moment.
Importantly, the road does not end here. I have spoken with a lot of adults that are just not happy with their career. Sure, perhaps they have good reason for staying or settling, but it’s not a bad practice to strive for something more. Something you can picture yourself doing in 5, 10, or even 15 years from now. Take a moment and ask yourself what you want to be when you grow up? If you have an answer in mind, jot it down for extra manifestation!
In my case, I’m often asked when I could see myself returning to an office job. I have worked from home for nearly 10 years, way before COVID, and I have no intentions of setting foot in an office any time soon, especially while my kids are little and need support. But perhaps in 15 years, I could picture my life a little differently – more travel, more face time with colleagues, more responsibility. I don’t know what that job would be just yet but it doesn’t hurt to consider it.
I also can see a lot of other ventures occurring as I and my children age. Maybe I take on more volunteer work or carve a new path entirely, following my heart instead of a paycheck. You never know.
The only thing we do know and can control, is that we don’t have to know what we want to be when we grow up right now. There is still time for plenty of growth, no matter what our age.
