Sure, we all balance work and family and chores. We do a lot of things because we feel obligated to do them; whether it’s to pay the bills or ensure our children grow up well-rounded or keep our household running smoothly. Those activities come with the adulting territory.
However, if we step back and truly consider our lives as a whole, are we fulfilled? Are we doing things because we want to do them instead of because we have to? What are we doing to better our own existence, which only we can control?
I try to keep a healthy dose of creativity in my life. I attempt to keep my children active and kind. I volunteer when I can to establishments I believe in. I maintain friendships and familial relationships that bring me joy.
But what drives my behavior? What is my real because?
When it comes to creativity, I’d say I have a drive to make. Ideas pop into my head, and I really get a full dopamine blast when the idea comes to fruition – and double-bonus points when I have a group of people interacting with the idea. For my kids, I want them to experience everything the world has to offer but do so in a humble, curious way. Volunteering means I can give back, because many people and places need support. And relationships, I want a full network of people to talk to and help in anyway I can.
Overall, I do the things I want to do because I want to impact people. I want to matter. And I certainly don’t want to go to the grave with any regrets.
Take a few moments and think about your because. Are you also driven by impact? Or are you driven to live every day to the fullest? Are you partaking in the activities you want to do because they bring you or others joy? I’d love to hear your real because. Drop me a line!
