I have asked this question multiple times to guests on the Pgh Dreamer’s Pod, and I’ve gotten anywhere from flying to invisibility to world peace. What I’ve noticed is that the question really speaks volumes to frustrations with our own humanity.
Unsurprisingly, the ability to fly was a large response. Reasons included traveling the world in a cheap way and without the nuisance of an airport; as well as getting to and from the many places we need to be all day long in a fast manner. Additionally, a few people wanted to feel the freedom, a sense that humans rarely experience.
Another common answer was the ability to teleport. Again, this points to the idea that we as a species are less than thrilled with a commute and are always in a hurry to reach their destination. We’ve taken on too much and are stretched too thin. Snap of our fingers to get to work would be ideal.
I also heard a few people mention invisibility and the ability to read minds – 2 ways to view others and collect their feedback in a safe manner. These superpowers certainly highlight our insecurity, constantly wondering what people think or what they say about us behind our backs. I especially enjoyed one answer that pertained to not needing to get dressed or do our hair if we were invisible!
A handful of people did take the philanthropic route, wishing their superpower could wipe negativity off the earth or answer humanitarian crises. While noble, these superpowers speak to the inequality and problems we have in the world – more human doings.
Not one person mentioned having super-human strength or the ability to conjure a fantastical power hammer on demand. Crime-fighting wasn’t mentioned directly, nor were indestructible shields or rocket boosters.
I invite you to answer this question yourself. What would your superpower be? And what does your answer say about your frustrations with the world?
