I recently had a conversation with a client about big challenges happening simultaneously. She felt overwhelmed and frustrated; however, she is surrounded by supportive family, is seeing a therapist, and is using my accountability buddy service. So what else could possibly help her get through this period?
We dove into a discussion regarding her interests. What does she like to do? What makes her tick? Unfortunately, she didn’t have an answer for that question.
This got me thinking. How many of us are so consumed by the have-tos that we completely forget about the want-tos? Are we perpetually meeting deadlines, caretaking for a family member, and keeping the house afloat all while we lose ourselves? Have we been money-motivated for too long that we can’t seem to see beyond a paycheck into what we actually want to spend our time doing?
While all of these acts are noble and sometimes selfless, they are not fulfilling by themselves. There needs to be other activities in your life that bring happiness. And it’s not selfish to want this for you.
Before we embark on yet another long and short year, I encourage you to think of 3 things. Only 3 things that make you happy. What 3 things do you wish you had more time to do? These can be solo or group activities, free or paid activities, whatever makes you smile. The only stipulation is that it’s completely for your enjoyment, not for financial gain or someone else’s bucket list.
My top 3 are:
- Date nights with my husband
- Traveling with my family
- Writing stories
Once you’ve figured out your 3 items, write them down and keep it in clear sight. Read and remind yourself frequently so you make it happen this year. Also, I’d love to hear from you! Drop a line below this blog or a DM. I can’t wait to learn which 3 things make you tick!
