Stepping into your home after a hard day should be relieving. Walking into your favorite room in your apartment should create calm. If you are overwhelmed with a messy space, here are five steps for organizing a messy room effectively:

1. Declutter

Begin by sorting through your belongings. Identify items you no longer need, use, or want. Create separate piles for things to keep, donate, discard, or recycle.

2. Categorize Items

Group similar items together—clothes, books, electronics, etc. This makes it easier to find and store things systematically.

3. Assign Storage Spaces

Decide where each category of items will go. Use storage solutions like shelves, bins, baskets, or drawers to keep everything organized and out of sight when not in use.

4. Label Containers

Label boxes, bins, or drawers to make it easier to locate things quickly. This also helps maintain organization over time.

5. Maintain Regularly

Set aside time each week or month to tidy up, ensuring everything stays in its designated place and clutter doesn’t build up again.
