With all of the constant stimuli – from a pocket device full of information overload to ongoing work meetings to chaotic gatherings – it’s easy enough to get caught up in the noise. Furthermore, we get in a mode of talking over one another or trying to be the loudest just to be heard. And at the end of the day, our brains have been on hyperdrive for way too long.

Quiet is essential. Not only does it refresh the brain, as this vital organ does get a break from processing, but it also relaxes, destresses, and enhances our wellbeing. Studies have indicated that silence can actually lower blood pressure and decrease insomnia. Even our creativity and productivity are increased after a period of quiet.

I am the first person to admit that I only enjoy silence when I have to concentrate or read at work. Otherwise, I’m quick to fill the quiet with a podcast episode or music. Even when the kids are playing, I put on music in the background. It’s super hard for me to be present without noise.

But, I’m willing to try. The next time I go for a walk, maybe I leave the earbuds at home. When I’m putting away laundry, maybe I don’t play music. When I’m feeling an itch to fill the silence during working-from-home hours, maybe I enjoy it for a few minutes and THEN press play on a podcast.

In the words of Depeche Mode, ‘enjoy the silence.’
